3 in 4 drivers yet to complete 35 hours CPC

According to research carried out recently by DCPC Training Contractor, Fleet Source, only 24% of drivers have completed the 35 hours CPC training required by 2019 with almost half at least 14 hours short.

Commercial drivers are required to do 35 hours of training every 5 years in order to keep their Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). Drivers are liable for fines of up to £1000 for driving professionally without a valid CPC.

The value of ongoing continual professional development in any profession is clear however only 52% of drivers in this survey welcomed the training. This may be due to inconsistencies in quality and format of the training from some providers.

Measuring hours in a classroom does little to prove the value of training. It is far better to focus on the outcomes. Hopefully we will see a reduction driver infringement levels and a measurable improvement in road safety.

Operators need to be on top of the status of their drivers’ CPC and this can be easily achieved with a driving licence and CPC verification solution such as SmartLicence to conduct checks at regular intervals determined by the risk profile of a driver with DVLA.
