DfT publishes evaluation of increased HGV speed limits
The Department for Transport has published its first-year evaluation of a three-year study following the HGV speed limit increase in April 2015 to 50 mph on single carriageways and to 60 mph on dual carriageways.
The report looks at three areas:
• Traffic speeds and flows
• Road safety
• Environment (emissions and noise)
Unsurprisingly it appears that the industry has taken a responsible approach to the new limits and results to date have not identified any negative road safety impacts. The positive benefits of improving road safety and operating efficiency appears to have been born out. There may also be benefits in compliance with drivers’ hours with reduced pressure on drivers and operators to stay within unrealistic speed limits and fewer frustrated car drivers!
