A temporary relaxation of the EU drivers’ hours rules for a 30-day period, for drivers was announced on 18 March 2020 to help with COVID-19. The temporary relaxation of the enforcement of the drivers’ hours rules started from 00:01 on 18 March 2020 and was planned to end at 23:59 on 16 April 2020 and was then extended to the end of May 2020. Following a review, the Department for Transport has confirmed that the temporary relaxation to the EU drivers’ hours rules will not be extended and ended at 23:59 on 31 May 2020. The relaxation to domestic GB drivers’ hours rules will continue until 23:59 on 14 June 2020, but will be kept under review. More information is available at Gov.uk Any drivers impacted by the exemption must note on the back of their tachograph charts or printouts the reasons why they are exceeding the normally permitted limits. This is usual practice in emergencies and is, of course, essential for enforcement purposes. Any enquiries regarding interpretation of these temporary arrangements should be made to the Freight Operator Licensing & Roadworthiness Division at the Department for Transport via the switchboard on 0207 944 3000 (during office hours) or to the DfT Duty Office on 0207 944 5999 (out of office hours).
