Progress is being made on the introduction of the Smart Tachograph in the EU. The Regulation (EU) N°165/2014 adopted in February 2014 by the European Parliament and the Council assumes the introduction of a new generation of digital tachograph which has been called the "Smart Tachograph". The new digital tachograph will include new security features, a Global Navigation Satellite System to pinpoint the geographic location of the device and different communication interfaces.  This will make compliance easier for operators and facilitate targeted enforcement by the authorities throughout the EU. The next step in March 2016 according to the Regulation, is that the European Commission intends to adopt an implementation act whereby the industry will receive a new technical annex specifying the requirements for the new Smart Tachograph. This paper will also define the process for elaborating this technical document and the timing for the introduction of the new Smart Tachograph. Watch this space!
