Road freight weights must be declared by shippers

All cargo owners must now provide road haulage operators with the weight of cargo goods to be transported in the EU. This is an extension to the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations, which were introduced as a global maritime regulation in 2016.
The new EU directive formally became law on 7th May means that shippers of goods loaded in containers and swapbodies should provide road transport operators of a statement or proof of compliance that the weight of the cargo and transport unit will not cause the operator to exceed the legal weight limits on the road.
It is the road transport operators responsibility to ensure that they are operating within all aspects of the law and should ensure they get the information required by shippers of goods.
