Is it time to extend the use of Digital Tachographs?

Following the recent news reported in the BBC concerning delivery drivers working excessive hours is it time to extend the use of digital tachograph technology to all commercial vehicles? Digital tachograph technology has been in operation since 2006 with commercial HGV operators. It helps to ensure fair competition between operators and protects drivers from demands of rogue operators that may put them and other road users at risk. The latest news regarding delivery drivers' hours therefore prompts the question of whether the use of digital tachographs should be extended to cover all classifications of commercial vehicles? According to Brake, the road safety charity, one in six crashes resulting in death or injury on major roads are fatigue-related and about 40% of fatigue-related crashes involve commercial vehicle drivers. No operator today can afford either the reputational or financial damage associated with blatant non-compliance of legislation regarding drivers' hours and the management of professional drivers, irrespective of in whose hands the choice to be non-compliant lies.
