Temporary relaxation of the enforcement of drivers’ hours due to Brexit and Covid-19

The Department for Transport has published two temporary relaxations of the enforcement of drivers’ hours rules.
The first is in response to the exceptional pressures on the freight industry due to the continued COVID-19 pandemic. It covers enforcement of the retained EU drivers’ hours rules in England, Scotland and Wales for drivers involved in the international carriage of goods by road and between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. These temporary relaxations apply from 12:01am on 22 January 2021 until 23:59pm on 31 March 2021 and are subject to review. You can get the details here.
In addition, the DfT has also published details of a second relaxation of EU drivers’ hours enforcement, for those hauliers carrying goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland reflecting delays crossing the Irish Sea due to Brexit. It also lasts until 31 March. The details of the relaxation are here.
